The Historic 1898 Lee County Courthouse was a first-round grant recipient in the Texas Historical Commission Courthouse Restoration Program. Extensive research was conducted using commissioners’ court records, University of Texas Architectural Archives, plans from architects’ previous work and a forensic architectural investigation into the building itself.

Not only was the exterior restored to its original glory, the investigations uncovered a colorfully painted interior, including a “stars and bars” motif in the main courtroom that was used throughout the building. Structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing work was sensitively installed to bring the building up to date for handicapped access, structural integrity and building code compliance.
